GOD, WHO ARE YOU? | GOD IS OUR EQUIPPER
As often as I have asked the question, “God, who are You?”, I have just as frequently asked “God, who am I?” Especially when it comes to stepping into my calling.
Like you, I’ve been called to many things throughout my life. As a teenager, I remember being called into a few leadership opportunities, and I wondered why God would choose me for those responsibilities. When I was 21 years old, I was hired as a third-grade teacher in the middle of the school year for a group of students that were so…extraordinary their veteran teacher had walked out in the middle of the year. My first day, I walked in excited and hopeful, and I walked out that afternoon overwhelmed and quite discouraged. I asked God, “Who am I to be trusted with these students who need so much more than I have to offer?” As a mom of three boys, ages four and under, I asked God, “Who am I to be responsible for these three precious lives?” And in every season of pastoral ministry, I have asked, every single day, “Who am I, God, to serve your precious people?” Most of my life, I’ve been in a role that I have felt exceeded my abilities, and, for a long while, I felt weary by this. Now, I’m finally learning to feel thankful for this. In the book of Exodus, Moses had to wrestle with this choice, as well. Does he want to live a life that relies on his own strength or a life that depends on the Lord’s strength?
Read Exodus 3
God comes to Moses and says, “I see the great pain your people are in. I see the oppression. I see the misery. I have heard their cries.” Just one chapter earlier, Moses had been enraged by how the Israelites were being treated. Moses was deeply bothered by the bondage his people were in and the oppression they were facing. How comforting is it to know that God saw and wanted to solve His problem?
Although Moses is more than hesitant in this chapter, and a good portion of the next, he eventually quits arguing and accepts the equipping. God equips Moses both physically and spiritually. Physically, he equips him with the words to say, the people he needs alongside him, and even supernatural signs and wonders. Spiritually, God equips Moses with the wisdom he needs to lead and with a heart for the people he’s leading.
God’s calling for our lives require us to be equipped by Him.
It is a gift from the Lord to be called beyond our abilities. While you wait for God’s physical equipping, keep asking Him for the spiritual equipping. God has called you to the people, opportunities, and responsibilities in your life; He will equip you for your calling.
What have you believed about God as an Equipper?
What is God revealing to you about being your Equipper?
