GOD, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT ME?
After spending three weeks learning all that God has to offer us, it seems like we would be pursuing Him much more than He would be pursuing us. After all, He has so much more to offer us than we have to offer Him. As we believe in the truth about His personhood, His plans, and His pursuit, we are compelled to pursue the Lord because we want to be as near as we can get to the One who is this good. Still, with all that we’ve learned about His goodness, our flesh does not naturally pursue the Lord. Our flesh so strongly prefers the comforts of this world over the presence of the Comforter.
Thankfully, the Lord is not just to be pursued; He pursues us. We see many stories in the Bible that reveal the Lord pursuing people. Some, God pursued as they were running towards Him; others were pursued by God even though they were running away from Him.
God’s pursuit of us gives each of us the opportunity to be on the receiving end of a love story.
Read John 3:1-21
In this passage, Nicodemus takes steps towards Jesus, albeit in the dark, because he wasn’t ready for his pursuit to become public. He is curious, which is fertile ground fo pursuing God. Nicodemus asks questions, also a helpful starting point for a pursuit.
Our pursuit of God and His pursuit of us doesn’t all look the same. The timing, the details, the journey all look different, but they all begin the same. They’re birthed out of the depths of love He has for us, described in the most well-known verse – John 3:16.
God began this pursuit by sending His Son out of His love for us. And then He calls Nicodemus, and us, to leave the darkness and pursue the light.
When we are tempted to think we are not being seen or pursued, this anchoring verse should fill our hearts with the truth of how dearly loved we are and how much we are worth to God.
As we begin a week of studying pursuits in scripture, how do you believe God feels about you?
Is there an area of your life that has been complicated because you haven’t believed the truth about how God feels about you?
