GOD, WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR ME?

Over the course of my life, I have made some big decisions that had significant impact on my life: choosing to follow Christ at the young age of six, my major in college, who to marry, and which jobs to take. Our life is made up of our choices and, often, those choices are compounding; they build upon one another. We see this in Ruth’s life. If you have time, read all 4 Chapters of Ruth. If not, read these passages:

Read

Ruth 1:6-19, Ruth 2:1-12, Ruth 3:1-13,  & Ruth 4:9-17

We see Ruth making big and what seem to be small decisions throughout this book. In chapter one, Ruth decides to stay with her mother-in-law, Naomi, and leave her home country of Moab for the land of Judah. This first decision she makes is a big one, and she is confident and determined not to be deterred from that decision. Her first decision is one towards God and His people. When we are seeking God’s plan for our lives, taking steps towards Him and His people is always the right decision, even when it takes us away from what is known and comfortable. Ruth also displays great confidence in her decision. She declares her decision; she insists on her decision; she even invites the Lord’s punishment into her life if she were to choose to stray from her decision. This is the way to follow God’s plan for our lives: no looking back or doubting.

When we know we’re moving towards Him and His people, we should do so with conviction, confidence, and certainty.

In Ruth 2, she seems to make a smaller decision, whose field to glean from, but again, this decision was guided by Ruth being near a relative she knew was faithful and devoted to the Lord. In Ruth 3, she makes a very bold decision, nearly proposing to Boaz. This decision is made by listening to the counsel of her mother-in-law, a woman Ruth knew to be led by God. In Ruth 4, we see all her decisions culminate into a great blessing over her life. She marries Boaz and becomes a mother to Obed, who will be the grandfather of David and, ultimately, a part of the lineage of Jesus!

From Ruth’s life, we learn very helpful principles about walking in God’s plan for our lives:  God’s plan is often revealed a step at a time. Be confident, determined, and certain in our decisions when they move us closer to the Lord and His people.  Stay near to the people of God by developing a godly community and seeking godly counsel in our lives.

Ruth’s life also reveals that the means are every bit as important as the end. God’s plan for your life will unfold as you keep taking steps towards Him.

  1. What have you believed about the Lord’s plans for your life?

  2. What is the Lord revealing to you about His plans for you?
