GOD, WHAT DO YOU PROMISE ME? | GOD REMINDS US OF HIS PROMISES

One of God’s promises has a visible reminder attached to it.

Read Genesis 9:1-17

The rainbow is a reminder of God’s promise to never again flood the earth. This may not seem like the most important promise at first, because, frankly, we’re not that concerned about a worldwide flood; we’ve never lived through one after all. But this promise had great meaning to Noah and his family. Genesis 6:5-8 tells us why God sent the flood.

‘The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.”

The flood was sent because of the wickedness of the human race and the evil thoughts of the human heart. Over all the earth, only one man found favor; only one family was saved. The promise that God would never again flood the earth must have meant so much to Noah and his family. They never wanted to experience again what only they had lived through.

This promise should be very meaningful to us as well. The Lord saw one faithful family and so to preserve humanity, he removed an entire generation of all life on earth. It may seem like God sent the flood because He was giving up, but God actually sent the flood because He is never going to give up. He will go to the furthest lengths to provide redemption. The flood was how God redeemed humanity during Noah’s life, but He has made a promise that a flood would never again be used for redemption. God knew He would send a new way for redemption through Jesus.

God’s promise to never again flood the earth is a promise of His mercy and His redemption. It’s a reminder of His promise that He will never give up on redeeming His people.
