GOD, WHAT DO YOU PROMISE ME? | GOD PROMISES THAT WE WILL FIND HIM
Few things are more annoying to me than losing something. Of course, I start with the “last place I remember seeing it” mentality. I don’t even consider it lost until I’ve looked there, but after raising three boys, I’ve learned that this first, and obvious step, doesn’t actually come naturally to everyone. Then I look in all the logical places it could be, and if it’s not in any of those places, I move from annoyed to angry. I think what bothers me most about losing something is that there’s no sense of progress as you’re looking. You’ve either found it, or you haven’t. All the places you’ve looked aren’t actually helping you find what’s lost. They’re just revealing it’s still lost.
Maybe that’s why I’ve had to work so hard to reframe what it means to seek God for myself. God has given us the promise in Proverbs 8:17: “those who seek me, find me.”
Seeking God doesn’t mean we’ve lost Him, He’s hiding from us, or that we must spend our time checking places He’s not at until we find the one place He is. That’s a game, and not one I’ve very particularly enjoyed and definitely not a game God is playing with us.
Another definition of seeking that I find more helpful is “turning your full attention, desire, and effort toward knowing and being near to God.”
Read Psalm 34
David is celebrating God’s Promise because, as David sought God, God answered Him. It seems what David sought from Him was comfort, because David said God answered by delivering him from his fears. I am so encouraged by David’s heart in this Psalm because his heart has been delivered from fear while his life is still in danger. He has just escaped two near-death experiences, and he is hiding in a cave. Not only is he still in danger, but God has promised he will be king; however, in the meantime, God is allowing a madman to be king. He has every reason to be full of fear and discouragement. Yet, he decided to turn his full attention, desire, and effort towards knowing and being near to God. When he got to the cave, he worshiped God first. He could have more easily desired that God change his circumstances and make Him king, but he desired most to worship God. He could have been putting his efforts towards becoming king, but he put his efforts towards knowing who God is. This is a beautiful model to us on how to seek God.
Seek Him by worshipping Him - giving Him your attention.
Seek Him by wanting Him most - making Him your full desire.
Seek Him by being in His Word and in His Church – making effort to be near to Him.
What have you believed about God’s Promise of Finding Him when we seek Him?
What is God revealing to you about His Promise of Finding Him when we seek Him?
